Austen has been passionate about horses since the age of five. By eleven, she was volunteering at horse rescues—happily scooping manure and soaking up every moment with the horses. At thirteen, she landed her first job mucking stalls in exchange for riding lessons. Just a year later, she had saved enough to pay for half of her first horse: a four-year-old Appaloosa named Amber, who introduced her to English pleasure and hunter riding.
As her interest shifted toward show jumping, Austen transitioned to a more competition-focused barn. Amber was sold, and in her place came Alakai, an off-the-track Thoroughbred who helped her reach new heights—literally—jumping up to 1.20 meters and beyond. They competed at venues in Parker, CO, Scottsdale, AZ, Fort Worth, TX, and their hometown, Albuquerque, NM.
In 2019, Austen relocated to Texas and, with a heavy heart, sold her horses. She then pursued a career in veterinary medicine, earning a certificate in veterinary assisting and working as an equine veterinary technician for three years. Although she valued the experience and skills gained during that time, she felt something was missing.
In April 2025, Austen returned to her true passion—equine behavior and training—this time as a full-time career. She also opened a dog rescue, further expanding her commitment to animal welfare. Working in the saddle again has reignited her purpose and brought deep fulfillment to her life. She plans to gain certifications in saddle fit education, equine therapy and rehabilitation, and equine nutrition.
She currently continues to grow as a rider and trainer under the mentorship of Jayne Lloyd at Snowdonia Sport Horse Complex, where she is immensely grateful to be based. As her riding advances, Austen is excited to share her knowledge, teach more lessons, and help others find confidence and success in the saddle—just as she has.
